Seeing the Spiritual

Seeing the Spiritual

Fannie Crosby said, “It seemed intended by the blessed providence of God that I should be blind all my life, and I thank him for the dispensation. If perfect earthly sight were offered me tomorrow I would not accept it. I might not have sung hymns to the praise of God if I had been distracted by the beautiful and interesting things about me…If I had a choice, I would still choose to remain blind…for when I die, the first face I will ever see will be the face of my blessed Saviour.

It is hard to think of anyone in modern times who understood the truth of seeing the invisible more than Fannie Crosby.  Though she was blind during her life, she clearly had a view of the invisible.  Her songs are still influencing us today, and those testify to her spiritual vision.

Seeing the invisible does not seem possible; but the Bible is clear about this truth.  Moses endured as seeing Him who is invisible [Hebrews 11:27]  It is not that an individual sees with his or her physical sense of sight.  It is an individual whose life reflects clear evidence of the reality of an unseen world.  Our lives should be lived in light of Him [Jesus], who we love – though we have NOT seen Him.

In II Kings we see an example of how seeing the spiritual can change everything.

2 Kings 6:17 And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

The Anxiety of this Servant

2 Kings 6:15 And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do?

Note the anxiousness of the servant because he did NOT have a complete view.  The problematic circumstance is evident, but because he only saw the surrounding army, an anxious response is what we see.  This short-sited, limited view leads to responses of panic, anxiousness, and worry.

Please do NOT take for granted that true spiritual vision begins with the Gospel2 Corinthians 4:3–4  But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

Some simply need to respond to the GOSPEL [death of Christ [for our sins], the burial of Jesus Christ, and the Resurrection of Jesus Christ] by receiving Him.  The world is full of anxious people who need to respond to the evidence already presented [Creation, conscience…].

On a side note, this young man was in the house of the man of God.  Though he was in the house with Elisha, he still did not have this necessary view.  Note that it is possible to be serving in the right place and still NOT see what matters most.  Religious deeds are no substitute for this time of vision.  If anything, what we do in the house of God should be a result of this vision we have.

The Answer of the Servant of God

In our home we have a basement into which my daughter will not go unless she is accompanied by someone else.  She has fear that is assuaged by the presence of me or my wife.  Many times, our fears are there because we misunderstand the reality of our situation.  We consider our circumstances, while being blinded to the very presence of God.

Note what the prophet says to his servant:  2 Kings 6:16  And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.

Elisha’s response to the servant shows the emotion or concern that was displayed by this servant.  The response is given, and this response shows a perfect [complete] view.  Elisha pointed to those that were with us.

Spiritual vision brings about the right heart & mind protection.  Philippians 4:6 is clear: Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

We are commanded to not be anxious and to simultaneously bring every thing to the Lord.  Our hearts and minds can be at peace as long as we are bringing the petitions to Someone who is greater than those things which tend to cause anxiety.  Remember, the right fear of God removes all lesser fears.

The Appeal for Sight of the Spiritual

2 Kings 6:17  And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

Spiritual vision is made a reality to us in prayer.  There are two thoughts to consider here: 1) Prayer is where we ask our Lord to help us see what matters most.  2.) Prayer is where we respond to what we know to be real.

In Prayer:
  • We affirm the reality of God’s presence.
  • We believe the reality of God’s power.
  • We consider the reality of God’s Person.
  • We devote to the reality of God’s preeminence.
  • We evoke the reality of God’s prominence.
  • We give in to the reality of God’s potential.

Please understand, we are NOT asking to see a ten foot cloud statue of Mary.  We are asking that God would help us to believe in the reality of the unseen hand.  We are asking that God would helps us to yield our lives to that which is spiritual.  We are asking that God would help us to set our affections on things above rather than on things on this earth.

1 Peter 1:8  Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:

Take time today for affection training.  Take time to ask the Lord to help you to be increased in faith in Him.  Take time to LOOK UNTO JESUS.  Consider Him, and by faith see more clearly by seeing Him Who is invisible.
